Garmin’s GPS-enabled cycle computers are motivational training tools with interactive features ideal for competitive cyclists, weekend riders and daily commuters. Basic GPS-enhanced cycle computers in Garmin’s Edge series include metrics that calculate calories burned, time, distance, speed, altitude and precise grading of climbs and descents driven by a barometric altimeter. Speed sensors, heart rate monitors and other Garmin accessories are sold a la carte and in bundled packages. Garmin cycle computers are water-resistant, lightweight, durable, and they are easy to install with a simple handlebar mounting system. A color display with touch-screen operation and sunlight-readability allow Garmin’s cycle computers to be used in adverse conditions.
Basic models in Garmin’s cycle computer product range, including the Edge 500 and the 305, typically sell for £150 to £220 depending on the retailer and bundle specifications. Out of the box, basic Garmin cycle computers include a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a power adapter as well as a USB interface that allows ride data to be shared with friends and riding partners through the web-based Garmin Connect™ system or uploaded and analysed with Garmin’s complimentary Training Centre software. Metrics for heart rate and calories burned are customized by inputting the rider’s height and weight. Riders can quickly and easily track performance, analyse workouts and pinpoint key factors affecting ride times. In addition to interactive charts and metrics, riders can view recorded routes overlaid on satellite maps for a complete post-ride analysis.
Turn-by-turn satellite navigation is available with Garmin’s top of the line cycle computers, including the Edge 705. Deluxe cycle computers range from £246.03 to £379.99 depending on the model and included accessories. Garmin cycle computers include eight display graphic, which allow for fully customised viewing. Region-specific street maps and topographic terrain maps are available on pre-loaded MapSource® and Navigator® microSD cards programmed exclusively for Garmin devices.
Self-calibrating wireless accessories can be paired with all Garmin cycle computers. Speed and pedaling cadence monitors and heart rate sensors are also available with bundled packages. Unlike other models, Garmin’s heart rate sensors are naturally conductive without requiring wetting. Garmin’s unique ANT wireless technology allows data to be viewed in real-time and transmitted to a remote PC without interference. When purchased on their own, Garmin’s heart rate monitors and cadence sensors retail for £30-40 per item. Region-specific SatNav cards typically cost £30-50 depending on the scope of the item. City Navigator® map cards allow users to view base maps, street maps or search for directions by postal code.
Garmin cycle computers include comprehensive functions designed to challenge and inspire when used alone or to compete with other riders. Intuitive features automatically suspend workout times when the rider’s speed drops. Auto lap settings can be customized by location or distance for no-hassle tracking. Solo riders can easily compete against their personal best or against Garmin’s Virtual Partner algorithm. Garmin’s long-lasting rechargeable batteries provide 8 to 10 hours of operation with low-energy peripherals in use. Whether used alone or in network, Garmin cycle computers provide riders with analytic tools, impressive technology and inspirational power.
