Cateye cycle computers are the world’s most popular brand of multifunction cycle computer, in large part because they are so reliable and durable. At the basic end, the affordable Cateye Enduro 8 Cycle Computer solves the problem of bumpy off-road design with heavy-duty cabling. Other models feature wireless construction. But like any electronics, all have common care needs to keep them in good condition and to avoid inadvertent mishaps.

A cycle computer’s of no use unless you can see the display, and the display’s of no use if it’s covered in mud (especially important in the off-road models.) But how to clean it? Stick to cloth and water. Whether you are cleaning the computer itself, the bracket, or the sensor, do not use chemical solvents or alcohol. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight; if you leave the computer on the bicycle itself, store the bike out of the sun. Alternately, remove the computer and store it separately.

Even though it’s designed for a pretty bumpy ride, you don’t want to jostle or drop a cycle computer. The computer itself is much more vulnerable to accidental impact shock when removed from its mount than when enclosed in the bracket, which holds the computer snugly in place. Be careful when the computer is out of its bracket..

Cateye includes the battery in its cycle computers. The battery is good for years, but eventually needs replacing. The Enduro 8 takes a CR2032 battery which you can order online or finding at an electronics store. (It’s time to replace the battery when the display dims.) Change it by taking the battery cover off, removing the old battery, and replacing it with the new one, “+” sign up. Otherwise, never try to disassemble the cycle computer, unless you are prepared to buy a new one.
